The ancient county of Essex has so much character and history it outclasses many rural shires from the history book's perspective, but modern life can sometimes swamp a distinguished past, and these paintings aim to rectify some misconceptions. The county where they still build Thames Barges, where the Romans laid out the first capital of Britannia, and that funded many a crusader, deserves and rewards much more study. This Essex is the county of 'Constable Country' and the playground of the great Munnings. These works are a call to arms.
