The Gate on the road to London was commissioned by by the Emperor Claudius on his brief visit to Britannia. Soon after construction it was damaged by Boadicea. There were four arches at first, by the forth Century all bar one was bricked up due to civil war and Saxon invasions. The Victorian Water Tower, Jumbo, reflects the shape in the distance.
