View

It is the most imposing and complex Roman villa in the Empre. The complex contains over 30 monumental scenic buildings arranged on a series of artificial esplanades.  The ruins are surrounded by gardens decorated with water basins and nymphaea (fountains).

The buildings are masterpieces of Roman architecture, making use of striking curved shapes enabled by extensive use of concrete.  It would have rivaled The Palace of Versailles.

About the Artist

J Hugh L Beattie is a distinguished commission artist based near Colchester, East Anglia.  His large studio is a vibrant busy tapestry of British culture, brought to life through the paint brush. Here, classical elegance meets patriotic history. Hugh’s work is a testament to the enduring beauty of traditional composition.  His work is a beacon of grace in an age often side-tracked by hum-drum modernism.

With a profound respect for the military and civil subjects, Hugh’s historical paintings more than mere images; they are stories in colour that have shaped the nation.  He captures the essence of British life and its past. From the heroicism our troops to tranquil pastures, each piece, like ‘Enemy over London’, or ‘Rally to the Standard’, is homage to the struggle that moulded our History.
