About the Artist

J Hugh L Beattie is a distinguished commission artist based near Colchester, East Anglia.  His large studio is a vibrant busy tapestry of British culture, brought to life through the paint brush. Here, classical elegance meets patriotic history. Hugh’s work is a testament to the enduring beauty of traditional composition.  His work is a beacon of grace in an age often side-tracked by hum-drum modernism.

With a profound respect for the military and civil subjects, Hugh’s historical paintings more than mere images; they are stories in colour that have shaped the nation.  He captures the essence of British life and its past. From the heroism of our troops to tranquil pastures, each piece, like ‘Enemy over London’, or ‘Rally to the Standard’, is homage to the struggle that moulded our History.

Service and Inspiration

Hugh has served in the Yeomanry for 30 years, and now he exhibits his work at all the major History Festivals in England.  He is not a photo-realist, but a follower of painters like Titian, Caravaggio and Sargent.  His attention to military detail has a soldier’s eye whilst still retaining the painterly qualities of a loose almost impressionistic approach together with historic accuracy.

For those looking to commission their own piece of history, Hugh offers a collaborative process.  He honours the client’s vision while infusing it with his distinctive artistic style.
