Oil on Linen, 26″ x 36″ +Frame. Painting of the statue of Britannia on top of The Customs House. City of London.
Aprox 2×3 foot, plus frame. On top of the dragon encrusted pediment of the Customs House 1844 sits a philosophical looking Britanni. Queen of the seas. The Background is a simplified hint of the 1977 glass office block behind. Blink and you’ll miss it on Lower Thames Street. What is the swirling figure at the bottom right hand corner? The classical interpretation of a dolphin. I’m not sure if they saw many of them…
About the Artist
J Hugh L Beattie is a distinguished commission artist based near Colchester, East Anglia. His large studio is a vibrant busy tapestry of British culture, brought to life through the paint brush. Here, classical elegance meets patriotic history. Hugh’s work is a testament to the enduring beauty of traditional composition. His work is a beacon of grace in an age often side-tracked by hum-drum modernism.
With a profound respect for the military and civil subjects, Hugh’s historical paintings more than mere images; they are stories in colour that have shaped the nation. He captures the essence of British life and its past. From the heroicism our troops to tranquil pastures, each piece, like ‘Enemy over London’, or ‘Rally to the Standard’, is homage to the struggle that moulded our History.
