The Gate on the road to London was commissioned after the Boadicea revolt as part of the new town wall. There were four arches at first, two for pedestrians and two for vehicles. By the forth Century all but one were bricked up due to civil wars and Saxon invasions. The Victorian Water Tower, Jumbo, reflects the same arch shape in the distance.
