Churchill Night Sentinel – Oil on Canvas, 12×16″
Oil painting of Winston Churchill and fellow officers, overlooking units on manoeuvers, during WW2. Painting from a war time photo of the PM in St Andrews, Scotland, December 1940. This was taken during the darkest days of WW2 when Germany seemed to be unstoppable. Churchills unfaltering resolve was the rock that saved the West. America only joined the war in December 1941.
Service and Inspiration
Hugh has served in the Yeomanry for 30 years, and now he exhibits his work at all the major History Festivals in England. He is not a photo-realist, but a follower of painters like Titian, Caravaggio and Sargent. His attention to military detail has a soldier’s eye whilst still retaining the painterly qualities of a loose almost impressionistic approach together with historic accuracy.
