Good By To All That

Galleries can be off-putting places. The prices are often overwhelming and the art either challenging or bewilderingly disappointing.
I have always found them hard to engage with and usually as soon as they hear I’m an artist they drop the polite interest instantaneously. To hire a gallery is expensive and 90% of the Private View attendees need to be invited personally. A hire gallery with a strong natural foot fall is obviously the perfect dream, but I have not found one yet. So it has taken me a long time to realize I should leave that gallery game alone once and for all.
I have developed a new strategy that engages with people who are not frequent gallery hoppers but like recognizable, relatable art. So in future I will be exhibiting in fates and fairs, museums and events, to find organically my market of people who love traditional art. Every time I have done this so far this year I have found useful leads. Selling original paintings from a trestle table is a special moment, but meeting new people in person, leads to new opportunities. My next stand is at the busiest museum shop in the country, the Tank Museum.
So I am very glad to wave good to my relationship with galleries! I shall let you know how it goes….
