J. Hugh L. Beattie. Portraits; Military & Civil.

Echoes of History is Essex’s answer to the Chalk Valley history festival. It is obviously not on the same scale yet as at 2024, but is an interesting visit if you happen to be near Chelmsford. This year there was a strong display of American Civil War re-enactors together with Russian and German WW2 re-enactors. The body of the exhibits were vehicles from the cold war, and a fully working scimitar from the Lancers was my absolute favourite. I was very pleased to see one of the Rifles battalions Recruiting there also.
I had a small stand at the show displaying my military art and gathered some useful contacts. The Mayor of Chelmsford was very interested in my Colchester Gun Salute painting and has plans to commission something impressive for Chelmsford. Chelmsford is primarily a modern town now, despite its original antiquity, but there are always corners of English towns, that have remnants of their original charm and I look forward to exploring the environs in more detail.
Echoes of History is a one weekend event on the second weekend of August. So far it is not for those with an interest in pre WW1 warfare, for that I would Recommend Tewkesbury and Chalk Valley festivals.
